Merry Christmas!!

P1060420.

BJAMS had such a wonderful, family-filled Christmas.  Grampy Loaring and auntie Char arrived Christmas eve, and nana and papa and my bro David and Jenn arrived for diner.  We celebrated an early Christmas with my side on Christmas eve.  Christmas day started out with Annika seeing all of the “prises” (presents) that Santa brought her.  Nana and Papa Sharratt came with great-grandpa Sid and aunt Carole, and then uncle Roy and Pat came.  Uncle Roy played chef for Christmas, slaving away in the kitchen the entire afternoon, making an amazing Christmas meal for everyone.  Nana and Papa brought the 20 lb turkey that cooked all day, giving the house the perfect Christmas smell.  We couldn’t have asked for a happier, more perfect Christmas.  Click on the link below to see lots of great pictures.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our family and friends!

We’re almost there!  I can’t wait to see Annika’s excitement Christmas morning!!  What an awesome time of year this is, and to spend it with a 2-year-old makes it so magical, I love it!  Here’s a video I took today, and some recent pics.  Selena is growing, growing, growing….already out of newborn clothes….

A bit of a tough week…with a great ending

I thought I’d been poisoned…

I was eating lunch with Annika on Tuesday after she came home from nursery school, and had a sudden feeling that I had to lie down…immediately.  I quickly finished up lunch and put Annika down for a nap and headed straight to bed, with Selena in tow, of course.  My body went into what seemed like a full crampy-ache with chills.  I definitely knew something wasn’t right.  I thought back to early that morning when I was trying to figure out how to start the humidifier, which was lent to us, and is quite a few years old.  When I opened up the humidifier to change the filters, something had bit me on the wrist.  The only thing that came to mind at the time was “gross, what the heck just bit me”, but then I forgot about it…until now.  The worse thoughts came to mind, like what if some mutated bug had gotten into my blood stream, or what if I had been infected with some kind of unknown rabies/H1N1/West Nile serum. But, since the bite on my wrist had pretty much gone away, I thought it was almost impossible I could have been infected with any poison from some unknown creature.

So, the next thought was that I was coming down with the flu, but I had no other symptoms, other than my right boob was starting to hurt a little.

I asked James to do some “research” on Google, because at this point I could bearing get myself out of bed.  I don’t think James truly understood the degree of my symptoms, so I took things into my own hands and did some research myself.  I came across what is called “mastitis”.  I’ve heard of this before and thought nothing of it.  I thought it was just something that sometimes happens to nursing moms but wasn’t anything that could make you feel the way I was feeling.  I immediately knew that was it when I saw the combination of symptoms.  I had to immediately get antibiotics, because this “mastitis” can get very bad very quickly.  The thought of dragging myself, Selena and Annika to the walk-in clinic was barely an option, considering I could hardly even lift Selena, so I decided to call my doctor’s office instead.  The amazingly awesome doctor that we have prescribed me antibiotics over the phone.  She knew what I had immediately upon hearing the symptoms.   The office was going to call the prescription into our pharmacy right away.

At this point I am in so much agony that I can’t hold back tears from the pain (this is very significant if you know me well at all….I’ve never cried my entire life over any pain, not even labour pain…)

James calls me from the pharmacy where he is to pick up my prescription to tell me that they hadn’t received the prescription from our doctor’s office, and our doctor’s office was closed for the day…..the worst phone call I’ve received from James, probably ever.  There was nothing else he could do.  I didn’t know how I was going to get through the night feeling the way I did…somehow I made it through.  Selena must have known mommy wasn’t well because she had the best sleep she’d had since birth!  That, and a couple doses of Advil (Advil and Tylenol are the only pain killers nursing moms can take) kept me sane that night.

The phone call to the doctor’s office first thing the following morning was a surprising one.  The prescription apparently had been “faxed” to the pharmacy, not phoned in.  I honestly would have punched the pharmacist straight in the face if he was in front of me during this phone conversation, as he had caused me to suffer through extreme discomfort for the entire night for no reason, other than forgetting to look at his fax machine the day before.  But, the antibiotics didn’t take long to do their thing, and by about the middle of the follow night my fever had broken, I was feeling somewhat more alive again, and by the next morning, I was almost fully functional again.

Wow, I would never wish “mastitis” upon anyone.  I had zero warning signs - it hit me like a ton of bricks.   Apparently this is something that can reoccur while nursing, so I’m praying that it doesn’t make a return.  I’m not one to complain about sicknesses or soreness, but this one was a real kicker!

To end the workweek on a better note, and try to forget the not-so-great beginning of it, James and I took the girls to see Santa Claus!  Annika is getting very excited for Christmas, and can’t wait to see the “prise” (aka “surprise”) that Santa may bring her on Christmas.  It’s going to be such a fun Christmas this year.  I love seeing Christmas through a child’s eyes!  There’s nothing more gratifying than seeing such pure joy and happiness!

Christmas Message from a Soldier

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE,
MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY,
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO,
IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES,
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT,
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR,
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN  DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED,
A TRUE BRITISH SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO, OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALISED THE FAMILIES,
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS,
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE,
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM,
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER,
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE,
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT,
A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES,
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED,
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL,
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED,
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE,
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR,
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
